Review in our community to help charity: water

Friday, October 9th, 2009

charitywatergirl

Wahanda is always dedicated to health, beauty and happiness whatever part of our world you’re in. That’s why we support charity: water on their mission to help provide clean and safe drinking water to deprived communities around the world. One billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water, a statistic which we’d prefer to not exist. To support this amazing cause we will give £1 for every review you write in our buzzing community to help fund a charity: water project.

What is charity: water?

Charity: water is a non-profit organisation bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. They get their water by drilling wells from the 30% of freshwater that exists in underground lakes. Often the developing nations have no way of getting to that supply themselves, which is where charity: water and the donations made by you come in. 100% of public donations and money raised directly fund water projects, with other sponsors that finance the day-to-day running costs, and since 2007 charity: water’s project has created sustainable sources of clean and safe water for over 600,000 people to date. To learn more about the charity and watch the introductory videos, visit the charity: water website.

Why charity: water?

Clean water is the foundation of a healthy body, and health and wellness are what Wahanda is all about. If you think about it, just £15 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. Unsafe drinking water causes 80% of all sickness and disease and 100% of all money raised for charity: water goes directly to fund project costs, which makes helping the cause completely worthwhile. When a well is being built, the local community are engaged in it and participate to ensure community ownership after the project is complete.

How can you help?

We love how lively our community is at Wahanda, so we thought it was about time to give something back. All you need to do is register for a free Wahanda account, find any spas, salons, or gyms you’ve visited, and write a review. You don’t need to be a wordsmith to make it count. For every review you write, we will donate £1 to charity: water to drill wells and provide people in developing countries with clean and safe water. Drilling a well costs between £3,000 and £10,000, which is why you should review your way to helping those who need it.

Strictly Go Dancing

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

strictly_logo_286

Good news, you no longer have to go back to the boring gym and pound the treadmills to keep in shape, as the new way to get fit is dancing. It’s sociable, exciting, different and perfect for making the hard job of keeping fit something fun to do.

The rise in the popularity of dancing lessons is largely due to the BBC’s hugely successful celebrity reality show, Strictly Come Dancing. Fitness fanatics are following in the dance steps of previous Strictly contestants such as Claire Sweeney, Darren Gough and Alesha Dixon to use dancing as a fun and energetic way of getting exercise without the monotony of treadmills and aerobics. Plus with the untimely passing of Dirty Dancing’s Patrick Swayze, dancing is in the spotlight more than ever before.

No need for silicone implants

Forget that amazing non-surgical facelift, lunchtime liposuction and quick tummy tuck over the weekend, because there’s a new op in town. The announcement of a new two-in-one cosmetic surgery treatment has hit the news this week, making that ‘too good to be true’ idea of taking the fat from your hips and putting it back in places you’d much rather have filled out, a reality.

‘Sweatox’ relieves hot Britons as temperatures soar

Sweatox - botox for sweatingWe all know that sweating is not particularly attractive but trying to control a dewy forehead or the moistness under your arm isn’t an easy task.  As experts issued health warnings this week to stay cool and keep protected, the heat is on which is why the Harley Medical Group declared the start of the ‘Sweatox Season’. It seems that some people are going to extreme measures to stop being sweaty this summer. The new trend is to go under the needle for a quick fix to zap away sweat, leaving you feeling fresh and fabulous.

What is Sweatox?
Sweatox is the name penned by the Harley Medical Group for anti-sweat botox treatments which have seen a dramatic increase in this unusual British heatwave.

This summer, the ‘Sweatox season’ has been brought forward because of the early and even unexpected summer heat. The Harley Medical Group has seen ‘Sweatox’ bookings outnumbering last year’s. Larger cities like London, Manchester and Chelmsford have seen the biggest increase in this new trend and people are flocking to get their pits and hands sweat free by using this famous treatment.

Sweatox can relieve sweat in the typically sweaty areas of the body, including:
•         Palms of the hands
•         Under arms
•         Chest
•         Soles of the feet

Dove Spa

If you’d like to give this anti-sweat treatment a go why not take a look at where you can get your dose of botox. But, if  ‘Sweatox’ is not for you then check out Wahanda’s top ten tips to stay cool and stress free this summer.

  1. Peak sun is a no no! Try to stay away from the sun between peak times 12-3 in the afternoon.
  2. Spritz on the go. Carry a moisture spritz in your bag to give yourself a much needed cool down on the go or why not try out the Dove Detox offer that uses a body scrub containing cooling peppermint oil.
  3. Hide your head. Hats are big in the fashion stakes this season and practical too, so hide your head in the sun and look stylish all at the same time.
  4. Dress cool. Now, we don’t mean dressing by the Vogue fashion guidelines with your key pieces- wearing a heavy suit in this heat can be seriously uncomfortable so opt for light weight and loose fit clothing.
  5. Pools are cool. Pop down to your local swimming pool to cool down either on your lunch break or after a hard day’s work.
  6. Water, water, water. Carry water at all times to keep hydrated and cool.
  7. Take time out. Take time to pamper yourself when the heat is on and stress levels are rising. Yoga is known to have a calming influence and keeps you fit too. Or keep calm with a relaxing massage.
  8. Retreat to cooler climates. If you really cannot stand this heat then why not retreat to a relaxing spa in the coolest country Iceland. The Blue Lagoon offers a range of treatments from Mud baths to Swedish massage.
  9. Spice is nice. A top tip for keeping cool is eating spicy foods. Spicy food stimulates your appetite, circulation and raises body temperature, making you sweat more therefore making you cooler.  Maybe that’s why in countries like Mexico and India their food is heavily influenced by hot spices.
  10. Sexy for summer. Keeping fit and healthy will make you happier in the summer months when you’re able to wear your favourite bikini or favourite summer mini dress. There are plenty of things to try including an all over body work out doing pole dancing or if you’d rather not work so hard try one of Wahanda’s free sessions of Power Plate.

Clicking your way to fitness

Lucy Wyndham-Read

Lucy Wyndham-Read

Wahanda loves any new project that makes wellness simple. This week we got the latest from celebrity Personal Trainer Lucy Wyndham-Read on her online scheme to get the nation fit and healthy.

What did you do before you worked in personal training?

I was never really into sport or fitness when I was at school. So when I left school I was not sure what career or direction to take, and then I thought I will join the army- so off I went. I spent five years in there and reached the rank of Corporal, and I learnt all about fitness, discipline and motivation. It was the best learning curve for me, as at a young age I realised that if you put your mind to something you can do and create anything.

Why did you decide to start personal training?

I developed a passion for fitness from being in the Army so when I left, I wanted to help others and teach them how fitness can be achieved and that with a little willpower you can get amazing results.

Who do you work with?

My main focus is on training women as I design fitness workouts that tone areas women want, such as the back of the upper arms, bust, tummy, bottom and thighs. I  have also worked on training children and ways of keeping the whole family fit. I have trained all levels of fitness, and ages from 10 to 70 years and have also worked with celebrity footballer’s wives and a GMTV Presenter.

Why did you come up with the idea of online fitness?

I came up with the idea two years ago as fitness is all about motivation and variation, and it occurred to me that I could provide the motivation by designing a personal plan for the client and the variation by providing a new plan each week. So by sending these through every week I have been able to provide clients with results. I even now have clients as far afield as Australia and personal training is now not just for the rich and famous!

What does your business involve? What do clients receive if they sign up?

Once a client has signed up they  receive via email an in-depth questionnaire, which they fill in and return. This then enables me to put together a personally designed plan just for them, and they then receive the fitness plan which goes out every Monday. A new programme then gets sent out the following week.

Do you track their progress? Do you ever train with the members, or do you only give them the information for them to workout themselves?

I send several emails throughout the week to track their progress. Also the clients have constant access to and support from me via email.  I do also provide one-to-one sessions with regular personal training clients.

How long a session should members aim for when they workout?

I suggest for cardio a minimum of 20 minutes and toning can be from  6 minutes to 12 minutes , each 3 times a week. Within 3 weeks of training clients will notice a real difference in their body shape, weight and fitness.

Do you offer nutritional information and more general lifestyle advice, as well as fitness advice?
Yes the programme also has free nutritional advice, such as eating plans, health shopping lists, cooking advice, and motivation plus some beauty tips.

Do your workouts need additional equipment?
As each programme is designed personally for the client, I will have established from their questionnaire if they have any equipment. If they don’t, then I provide exercises that don’t require any props.

How easy is it to keep on track and stay motivated with an online personal training?
Very easy as it gives consistent support, and is flexible, fun, varied, done at home and affordable.

Do you have any more projects in mind for the future?
Yes, I am due for my third book to be published later this year and currently working on a new one. I am also in the process of launching a women’s fitness clothing range. I am developing my LWR Fitness website and will produce a selection of videos for different workouts that I can then provide to my online members.
