Medium-sized spas suffer in recession

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Feeling the pinch? You’re not the only one. The Trends in the Hotel Spa Industry 2011 report by PKF Hopsitality Research has shown that people are thinking twice before splashing their cash – with hotel spa revenue experiencing, on average, a 10.5% decline in 2010. With mid-market and medium-sized spas feeling the squeeze the most, it looks like it could be time for businesses to consider different marketing tactics…

According to the report, urban hotel spas have been affected the least, with a drop in revenue of only 1.2 per cent – while the spas at resort hotels have been hit the hardest, experiencing a fall of 13.6%. One of the reasons for the overall decline could, the report suggests, be over saturation of the middle market:

‘A possible reason for the significant decline in the medium-size spa group is overbuilding.

‘Medium-sized spas are often found in hotels that likely should have a spa as a guest amenity, but the property is not specifically known for its spa facility or experience. Therefore, it is neither an intimate, boutique spa nor is it a grand showcase spa for the property’s marketing and reputation.

‘Additionally, the spa facilities may have been built as a ratio of spa treatment rooms to total guest rooms, rather than built to an actual projection of hotel spa demand and capture. Either individually or combined, these factors result in a greater potential negative impact on spa revenues during recession and early recovery periods.’ Hopefully the spas will soon be able to get back on an even keel…

Of course, treating yourself doesn’t have to break the bank. In need of some serious relaxation? Why not check out our deals and offers on spa breaks for savings that could save the day.

Maldives spa ban overturned

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Earlier in January, we blogged about the Maldives government’s decision to close the islands’ massage parlours and spas – a major blow to the tourism industry and to spa lovers worldwide. Luckily, the ban has since been lifted – allowing hotels and resorts to continue operating as usual. We love it when a story has a happy ending…

Unfortunately, however, the ban has only been temporarily overturned. Fans of the Maldives will have to wait for the Supreme Court to officially adjudicate the matter and decide the fate of the nation’s spas – but until then, it looks as though honeymooners and holidaymakers will be able to enjoy massages and spa treatments to their hearts’ content. Best organise a break to the islands quickly, in case things are set to change forever…

Has all this talk of holidaying got you daydreaming? Browse our overseas spas or treat yourself to a spa break in the UK.

Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Limerick, shows support for ‘Living in a Window’

Monday, November 28th, 2011

We love to see people coming together to help a worthy cause – so we were very impressed by the efforts of the staff at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Limerick. The staff, along with leisure centre members and guests, recently completed a sponsored treadmill challenge as part of Limerick’s Live 95FM ‘Living in a Window’ project. We’ve got to admit, we admire their stamina…

This year’s fundraising saw hotel and spa staff take it in turns to complete 30 minute workouts on a treadmill in the lobby area. With over €800 raised for ‘Living in a Window’, we reckon the dedicated team members must be feeling pretty proud of themselves – not to mention nice and fit.

‘Living in a Window’ is an annual project, which helps to raise funds for CARI (Children at Risk in Ireland) and the Children’s Ark Unit at the Midwestern Regional Hospital, Dooradoyle. The project is right up the Radisson Blu Hotel’s street, as the hotel and spa have had an Active Responsible Business programme in place since 2002. A leisure venue that gets involved in community projects, environmental work and health and safety? We like their style…

Fancy a bit of a break? Why not visit the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa for some perfect pampering. We promise you won’t have to hop on the treadmill (unless you want to!)

Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa becomes York’s first 5 star hotel

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Congratulations to the staff at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa, which has just been awarded a prestigious 5 star rating. One of only 90 hotels in the UK to receive 5 stars from the AA, the Grand is also home to one of Yorkshire’s most luxurious spas. We know where we’ll be going next time we fancy a bit of a break…

In addition to receiving the highly sought after 5 star rating, the hotel has received two AA rosettes in recognition of its restaurant, the Grill Room at the Grand. Foodies will be glad to know that use of the restaurant is not just exclusive to hotel guests – meaning that everyone has the opportunity to sample a 5 star lifestyle.

A spokesperson for the AA said: ‘The Grand has achieved one of the highest accolades awarded by the AA. 5 black stars are a symbol of excellence achieved through dedication, high levels of investment and a passion to be the best. We are delighted that York has its first 5 star hotel.’

Maria Florou, General Manager of the hotel, is equally delighted: ‘The team here deserve enormous credit for what they have done – they have worked incredibly hard and have put their heart and soul into this project. But we all know that an even greater challenge lies ahead, and that is maintaining and even exceeding the high standards that we have set for ourselves.

‘Our guest feedback tells us that we have always delivered a 5 star experience. But this weekend it will feel extra special to welcome guests into a 5 star rated hotel.’

Guests craving the 5 star treatment are sure to love the hotel’s pampering spa. Set in the impressive vaults of the Grade II listed building, the spa offers facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and relaxation rooms. Guests can also enjoy a range of different face and body treatments designed to rejuvenate, refresh and revive. Sounds right up our street…

Want to visit the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa to see it for yourself? Keep an eye out for some great deals, such as this relaxing spa day.

Wahanda Feel Gorgeous Health & Beauty Poll 2011

A nationwide poll reveals that while we may appear to live in a celebrity-obsessed world, 80% of us say we are not influenced by celebrity endorsement when it comes to purchasing health and beauty treatments. Instead, over 70% of women surveyed said they trust online reviews posted by the general public and that they make their health and beauty purchases based on their peers’ recommendations.

The Feel Gorgeous Poll* commissioned by Wahanda, the world’s largest online health, beauty and wellbeing specialist, asked 1,700 women aged 25 to 54 about their health and beauty treatments.

The poll found that 68% of us are desperate for a lifestyle change to reduce our stress levels, although 80% of us didn’t feel we could give up alcohol to do this.  What’s more, we feel that modifying our eating habits can have a greater effect on our wellbeing than exercise.  It’s no surprise then to find out that our favourite treatment is massage (37%) because it is relaxing and helps us to unwind.

The poll further reveals that we believe in the power of ‘good hair days’, with the majority of us booking a haircut or colour every 9 weeks. However, when it comes to body hair, while we might think a Brazilian or Hollywood is now the norm, we are instead opting to be a little more hirsute by stretching out our professional hair removal to just 2 or 3 times a year.

Commenting on the poll, Lopo Champalimaud, CEO of Wahanda said: “This shows the power of online reviews and forums and their reputation as a trustworthy source of information. People want to engage with like-minded people and sites like Wahanda provide this facility.  Furthermore, it gives users a feeling of belonging and wanting to share their own experiences to the benefit of others. We created Wahanda as a space to inspire, advise and fulfill our visitors’ health, beauty and wellbeing requirements and we’re delighted to see so many people benefiting from this.”

Voted ‘Best Online Beauty Site’ by ELLE UK, Wahanda is the world’s leading marketplace for health, beauty and wellness attracting over 750,000 UV a month. With more spas, salons, treatments and practitioners listed than any other site, Wahanda offers an interactive community allowing customers to voice recommendations, write reviews and connect with industry experts. As well as inspiring content, Wahanda offers savings on spa breaks with real-time booking functionality, thousands of health, beauty and fitness offers, daily MobDeals plus their signature Beauty and Spa Gift Vouchers, which are redeemable at over 900 destinations nationwide.
