Wahanda Feel Gorgeous Health & Beauty Poll 2011

A nationwide poll reveals that while we may appear to live in a celebrity-obsessed world, 80% of us say we are not influenced by celebrity endorsement when it comes to purchasing health and beauty treatments. Instead, over 70% of women surveyed said they trust online reviews posted by the general public and that they make their health and beauty purchases based on their peers’ recommendations.

The Feel Gorgeous Poll* commissioned by Wahanda, the world’s largest online health, beauty and wellbeing specialist, asked 1,700 women aged 25 to 54 about their health and beauty treatments.

The poll found that 68% of us are desperate for a lifestyle change to reduce our stress levels, although 80% of us didn’t feel we could give up alcohol to do this.  What’s more, we feel that modifying our eating habits can have a greater effect on our wellbeing than exercise.  It’s no surprise then to find out that our favourite treatment is massage (37%) because it is relaxing and helps us to unwind.

The poll further reveals that we believe in the power of ‘good hair days’, with the majority of us booking a haircut or colour every 9 weeks. However, when it comes to body hair, while we might think a Brazilian or Hollywood is now the norm, we are instead opting to be a little more hirsute by stretching out our professional hair removal to just 2 or 3 times a year.

Commenting on the poll, Lopo Champalimaud, CEO of Wahanda said: “This shows the power of online reviews and forums and their reputation as a trustworthy source of information. People want to engage with like-minded people and sites like Wahanda provide this facility.  Furthermore, it gives users a feeling of belonging and wanting to share their own experiences to the benefit of others. We created Wahanda as a space to inspire, advise and fulfill our visitors’ health, beauty and wellbeing requirements and we’re delighted to see so many people benefiting from this.”

Voted ‘Best Online Beauty Site’ by ELLE UK, Wahanda is the world’s leading marketplace for health, beauty and wellness attracting over 750,000 UV a month. Your online partner has had a makeover…

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

You’ll know by now that here at Wahanda we’re dedicated to making sure that everyone looks and feels the best they can at all times. With our daily MobDeals, beauty offers and fitness fixes, we’ve got it covered from head to toe.

So with all of this beautifying going around, we thought we’d better step up to the mark and indulge in a little makeover ourselves. Can’t go letting the side down by looking shabby, can we?

We’ve got six big changes for you:

It’s all designed to make things much easier for customers to get what they want, where they want it, for the best possible price. Who can argue with that? And don’t worry, as a supplier, if your products are popular they’ll be instantly visible from the main pages – no more searching through the site to find the bestsellers. Clients will also find it much easier to search by location now, so you’ll get more local customers through your doors, who are more likely to keep coming back. We look good from all angles…

Phew. We’re exhausted from all of this pampering. While we bask in our new-found gorgeousness, wander around the site and take advantage of all the beauty deals we’ve got going for you as well – and don’t forget to let us know what you think of our makeover by tweeting @Wahanda. We quite like compliments, you know…

Saks to open beauty-only salons

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

The UK’s leading chain of hair and beauty salons, Saks, have revealed plans to open some beauty-only salons. Known predominantly for their award-winning hair services, managing director Stephen Kee is interested on developing the beauty side of the salons, saying:

“I want them to have only beauty imagery in the windows and a different look inside but still with colours and messages that make it clear they are part of the Saks brand. Most franchisees that approach us will be specialist in either beauty or hair; few have trained to specialise in both. If the managers have dedicated their lives to beauty therapy it makes sense for us to allow them to focus all their time on that.”

The move gives Saks the opportunity to promote both hair and beauty equally, something which is difficult on one site. They currently have 140 salons nationwide – and a few international branches on top of that – and are looking to open four beauty-focused salons in 2011. After riding out the recession, Kee insists that it’s now all about growth.

Franchise opportunities are currently available, so apply online – then let us help you get your new business booming!

Calling all mobile therapists…

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Urban Retreat at Home – a new franchise model by Harrods and Harvey Nichols – gives you the chance to offer clients a premium salon experience in the comfort of their own front room.

George Hammer, founder of Urban Retreat, stated: “We’re building on the experience of having been at Harrods for 10 years and this franchise opportunity is open to all mobile therapists.

“Up to now, mobile therapists have often been considered second rate, badly trained and inconsistent. What we’re doing is harnessing all the good parts about being a mobile therapists and creating an up-market offering rather than a discount, cheap offering.

“Most mobile therapists work on the basis that they are cheaper than a salon – we’re working on the basis that At Home treatments will be either at salon price, or above, by making it a premium experience.”

Urban Retreat has been voted 2011’s Best UK Day Spa and they’re known for being at the forefront of the luxury beauty industry. They pride themselves on offering the finest selection of hair and beauty brands – and they’re now giving you the chance to be a part of their prestigious business.

Becoming a franchisee costs £12,000 and comes complete with a fully equipped Audi A3 car, MP3 player, candles, robes and scented tea. You’ll get full, specialised training at their Urban Retreat Beauty School – all you need is an NVQ Level 3 qualification or a Cidesco certificate. Sound like something you’d be interested in? Fill out a registration form on their website and once you’re up and running, we’ll give you a helping hand in roping in those all-important clients.

For those who have the passion and knowledge required to break into the beauty arena, but are perhaps less business savvy, a new book could help. Start and Run a Successful Beauty Salon is a guide to cashing in on the nation’s determination to stay pampered and polished as they strive to weather the storm, no matter what the temperamental financial climate throws at them.

The book’s unique step-by-step format walks you through the entire process of establishing a beauty salon, covering specifics such as how to choose a location, qualifications that you and your staff will need, how to select equipment and furniture, business management and the expert authors’ view on the elusive formula for success.

Written by beauty therapist Sally Medcalf (who has 25 years of beauty industry experience under her belt, including 12 years running her own salon and Beauty Therapist and Facialist of the year nominations) and marketing expert Bijan Yousef-Zadeh (a member of Chartered Management Institute and a successful beauty business entrepreneur), Start and Run a Successful Beauty Salon is published by How To Books Ltd and is available at £14.99 in major bookshops and online retailers across the country.
