Government launches free mentoring scheme for spa professionals

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

At Wahanda, we’ve always maintained that spas are important – and it looks as though the government agrees. A recently launched government initiative, called Get Mentoring, will allow spa and beauty professionals to access free business mentoring training – putting them in a good position to share their valuable knowledge and skills. That’s exactly the sort of thing we like to hear…

Led by the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI), the scheme is set to receive £1.2m of grant funding to help it achieve its objectives. Once they’ve undergone the seven hours of training required, mentors will then be deployed across a variety of different mentoring organisations, providing services both in person and via distance learning. Looks like future generations of spa professionals are going to get the best start possible…

Alan Goldsbro, CEO of Habia, the government-approved standard setting body for the hair, beauty and spa industries, says: ‘Mentoring can be an extremely powerful and instructive tool for anyone running a business or thinking of running one. A good mentor can pass onto you their own knowledge and experience, giving you a vital head start.’

Want to become a mentor yourself? Mentors will receive a SFEDI Certificate of Recognition for completing the Introduction to Enterprise Mentoring Course, in addition to free membership of the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (IoEE) and a listing on www.mentorsme.co.uk. Not bad, if you ask us…

Tracey Woodward’s ten secrets to success

Friday, December 9th, 2011

In need of some inspiration? Look no further. Following her mentoring session for CEW(UK), top salon director Tracey Woodward has shared ten terrific tips for budding entrepreneurs. If you’re looking to realise your potential, we think this advice is definitely worth keeping handy. Post-it notes at the ready…

Having entered the beauty industry in 1983, working on a Clinique counter, Tracey has since worked her way up and is now director at the glamorous Urban Retreat, Harrods. It hasn’t been easy, though – self-taught Tracey was plagued with illness from a young age, and relied on her ‘I can do that’ attitude to help her realise her dreams. We reckon her younger self would be pretty proud of where she’s got to today…

So what does Tracey reckon it takes to make it to the top? Here are her ten secrets to becoming successful in the world of beauty:

1. Read every magazine and supplement you can get your hands on

2. Inspect what you expect and correct

3. Get a great mentor

4. Listen and talk to everyone in and around your business

5. Don’t be put off by tomorrow, fix everything you can today

6. Remember that procrastination is the thief of time

7. Common sense isn’t all that common!

8. Don’t be threatened by your staff – their success is your success

9. Join CEW(UK) and attend their Mentoring Events

10. Charm will always win over intelligence

We don’t know about you, but with Tracey’s wise words to guide us we feel ready to achieve anything!
