Blue Harbour Spa reopens

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Looking for a bit of luxury to cheer you up this January? Fans of Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour will be glad to know that the hotel has recently reopened its Blue Harbour Spa to guests and non-resident club members. Race you to the massage table…

Visitors to the refurbished spa will be able to enjoy use of the steam room, sauna and 17ft swimming pool (complete with waterfalls), as well as the fitness centre, hair salon and nail bar. However, it’s the brand new range of Voya treatments and rituals that’s got us really excited – and we think you’ll like the sound of it, too…

Ireland-based brand Voya joins Susan Molyneux and Aromatherapy Associates in offering products at the spa – adding a touch of the ocean to the mix with its nourishing seaweed extracts. With all Voya treatments inspired by the brand’s organic philosophy, you can ensure there’ll be no synthetic nasties lurking  here – only gentle, natural ingredients designed to relax, replenish and rejuvenate. What better way to kickstart a cleansing detox?

Fancy setting the tone for your New Year’s beauty and wellbeing regime with a Voya experience at the Blue Harbour Spa? Why not start as you mean to go on by visiting our dedicated Blue Harbour Spa page for more information.

New training academy for spa therapists

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Looking to set yourself apart from the competition? We’ve got some good news for newly qualified spa and beauty therapists – a new ‘finishing school’ has opened in Putney. The ARK Academy, run by skincare specialists ARK Age Aware, will help to fully prepare therapists for the working environment – equipping them with a variety of professional and commercial skills. We think it’s an inspired idea…

Wondering why a finishing school is necessary? Sara Wilce, Director of the Academy, says: ‘I’ve spent the last 12 years of my career trying to recruit commercially viable therapists and it is getting increasingly difficult to do so, with lack of technique and confidence in massage in particular.

‘The idea for the ARK Academy arose from that struggle and will allow newly qualified therapists to improve their techniques, gain that all important confidence and set them on the path to a fulfilling career.’ Sounds pretty good to us…

Training packages at the Academy will include the development of skills such as management, reception training, customer service provision, team leadership and refresher courses for therapists who are re-entering the industry. Advanced courses in massage are also available, as is support for businesses retailing ARK products – so you needn’t panic if you haven’t quite mastered the finishing touches yet.

GLL to open more Spa-London venues

Friday, August 12th, 2011

We’re big fans of  Spa-London, so we were pleased to hear that the brand has plans to expand. GLL, the leisure trust behind the concept, will be opening the first of the new sites later this year. Swimming costumes at the ready…

The first new Spa-London venue is due to be opened at the Rainbow Centre in Epsom, later this year. GLL are also considering setting up a second at their Wimbledon leisure centre – good news for South Londoners.

Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL, said: ‘[Spa-London] forms part of our product portfolio, but only in certain locations.

‘You’re not going to see another 20 Spa-Londons, but you will see some more.’

Spa-London prides itself in combining luxury with affordability – meaning that being pampered needn’t break the bank. Like the sound of some guilt-free relaxation? Check out Spa-London on the Wahanda website.

Fish Pedicures Arrive in London – Aqua Sheko

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Feet feeling scaly? In no fit state to get out the sandals yet? Well perhaps you need a visit to Aqua Sheko, a plush new day spa in High Street Kensington.  This is a spa with a difference however- average pedi’s are off the menu, to be replaced by the latest eco-friendly beauty treatment, the ‘fish pedicure’. But before you turn up your nose at the idea of bathing your toes in tuna, let’s get one thing straight- these ‘doctor’ fish are alive, well and eager to nibble the dead skin from your tootsies.

The breed of fish used are called ‘Garra Rufa’ or ‘doctor’ fish and were brought from Turkey by two brothers who discovered them accidentally whilst swimming. They have no teeth and rely on ‘suction cup’ mouths to gently lift away dead cells to reveal younger, new skin underneath. The fish are also believed to secrete an enzyme, named ‘diathanol’, which speeds up skin regeneration. This means that not only do these barmy beauticians exfoliate your soles, but regular ‘fish pedicures’ may ease skin complaints such as psoriasis.

You needn’t worry about the treatment being unappetising to your diving dermatologists either. It’s mutually beneficial since the fish thrive in warm water- up to 43 degrees centigrade- in which very little of nutritional value is available. Your old cells make an appetising meal in comparison to their usual slim pickings.

The spa itself – the first to offer the treatment in London – is beautifully presented, with a calming deep blue colour scheme, ambient lighting and sleek, black couches surrounding the pools. The tanks themselves are hygienic and oxygen-filtered to provide the best possible environment for the fish. They are cleaned using ultra-violet light to discourage bacteria from growing.

Upon arrival clients are asked to remove their shoes and wash their feet to get rid of any lotions and potions which may be harmful to the Garra Rufa. They then submerge their feel in the pools, enjoying a ‘fluttering’ sensation which may be slightly tickly at first but soon becomes very relaxing. Because the treatment allows you to be fully clothed it may be slipped into a spare lunch hour and can be sociable, allowing friends to enjoy a pedicure together.

The spa’s website puts it best, describing this piscatorial pedicure as ‘for anyone with an enquiring mind, a taste for the exotic and a penchant for pumice stones’. Check out our tried and tested for insider info and keep eyes peeled for a MobDeal at this fish-friendly spa on Thursday 24th June
