Award-winning Kundalini Yoga

Forest Whitaker

Forest Whitaker

Here at Wahanda we always have the hottest Hollywood scoops of which fitness regime the A list stars swear by, and this week we’ve dug the dirt on the latest yoga trend. Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Forest Whitaker are just some celebrities among the elite that are fanatical of Kundalini Yoga. Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker has been practising Kundalini Yoga for decades, and has shared that if he hadn’t been an actor (heaven forbid), he would have taken up a career in holistic health. Well, if Kundalini Yoga is good enough for Whitaker, then Wahanda thinks it’s more than good enough for you!

The talented actor admits that by practising Kundalini Yoga he has become more intuitive and alert, and believes the exercise helped him take his acting to the next level to win an Academy Award. Whitaker says Kundalini Yoga has helped him in many areas of his life from his personal healing to his general sense of well-being.

The word Kundalini literally means “the curl of the lock of hair”, a metaphor- a poetic way of describing the flow of energy and consciousness that already exists within each one of us. It’s no wonder Madonna practises Kundalini during her world tours. Fitness is of course an important part of Madonna’s stage act and her Kundalini Yoga practice really helps both her body and wellbeing. As a celebrity yoga figure, Madonna has done more for the young who have been seeking ways to help heal the stress, confusion and direction in their lives than other alternatives. The science of Kundalini Yoga is known to arouse the creative being from within, which certainly explains Whitaker’s success! The  yoga trend opens your body’s chakras (energy centres), eases the mind, and helps the body and mind to be open, strong and receptive. Kundalini is by far one of the most powerful yoga practices around.

Botox comes before bills!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

botoxAt Wahanda we’re sent press releases every day about new fitness trends, the latest spa openings and which celebrity has had the most cosmetic surgery, however today we received the below and we just couldn’t resist shouting about it. Despite all the news of recession and the dreaded credit crunch, it would seem people are more concerned with keeping up appearances, rather than settling their household bills. Non-surgical cosmetic clinic Riverbanks, who conducted the survey admitted that cash-stricken patients are taking extreme measures to ensure they can continue with their beauty treatments.

Following a surge in demand for Botox treatments at the Harpenden clinic, Dr Jain, Medical Director at Riverbanks reveals that many of his patients are adamant that the credit crunch will not impact on their beauty regime and are prepared to make sacrifices in others areas of their lives instead.

‘Demand for Botox at the moment is rising and just last week, one patient told me she’d be prepared to give up anything except her Botox treatments. It would seem that many people are considering this once ‘luxury’ spend as an essential part of their lives and one which they don’t intend on giving up just because the country is in recession’, says Dr Jain.

Despite the rippling impact of reduced spending on the High Street, a shifting trend for continued spend in areas once considered as a ‘luxury’ has been mirrored in the travel industry, where a recent survey revealed that 65% were prepared to sacrifice spending in other areas to ensure that they could keep their annual holiday. Dr Jain believes that people are simply choosing place a higher value on things which boost their morale and keep their spirits up.

‘The economy is all doom and gloom and people just want to do things which make them feel good. People do have less money to spend on cosmetic treatments than in the past, but with prices for Botox at Riverbanks starting at just £200, patients are seeing this as a worthwhile spend compared to say, yet another shopping spree or a month’s worth of nights out on the town’ says Dr Jain.

Best foot forward

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

At Wahanda we’re always one spa step ahead when it comes to new treatments – we brought you the Geisha facial, four hands massage and now this: no-hands massage! Imagine a massage treatment that is both deeply profound and wonderfully relaxing without the use of hands.  Yes, you heard us – get pampered or learn to pamper someone else with a massage which solely uses the feet as therapeutic tools.

This isn’t just about foot fetishes, but is the admirable work of Sue Kent, a Swansea lass who set up a new specialist therapy business called Enjoyfeet. Sue has an upper limb disability but this doesn’t deter her creativity. She developed the no-hands massage technique by giving foot massages on an amateur basis for over six years and lots of people suggested she should do it professionally. “I worked on ways of developing traditional full-body massage therapy so that it could be professionally administered without any use of the upper body,” explains Sue. After training with the Academy of Health and Beauty as a massage therapist, Sue has successfully set up her own professional practice and we here at Wahanda would like you to get your feet in the door!

So now that you can literally ‘enjoy feet’ like never before, let us explain how it works. Clients are treated on a padded mat on the floor, and the massage is given seated, using a series of carefully placed chairs, which allow access to the client whilst providing support so that the therapist is not put under strain. One advantage of the technique is that it allows a fuller deep tissue massage as the central position on a chair over the body allows the therapist to make a direct comparison of the muscles either side of the body and these muscles can be worked on simultaneously. If you’re a bit sceptical of this sudden feet friendliness, worry not! The massage therapy has been so successful that Sue’s company, Enjoyfeet, give workshops and have also produced a DVD which teaches all you need to know about the unique no-hands technique for giving a full body massage, including back, buttocks, legs, feet, neck, chest, abdomen, arm and hand massage. Find out more on how you can put your tootsies to the test at www.enjoyfeet.co.uk.

Shaping up with baby yoga

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

It seems adults aren’t the only ones who can benefit from regular yoga classes. It’s becoming more and more evident by the number of classes popping up around the country that the latest post-pregnancy craze is ‘Mother and baby’ yoga classes. These classes give new mums a chance to connect with their babies on a spiritual, physical and emotional level, and if truth is to be believed – it’s highly beneficial for both parties.

Classes vary from place to place but all will incorporate core yoga moves including hip asanas, spinal twists, holds and balances and for the younger audience – singing and rhymes to stimulate the babies senses.

For mum’s the classes are an opportunity to strengthen their pelvic floor and core abdominal muscles following the birth, as well as enabling interaction with their baby and increasing their confidence in handling their bundle of joy but it’s claimed that babies benefit tenfold. Not only does the exercise encourage the development of supple joints, it stimulates brain development and balance, leading to a better posture and more satisfactory breathing. In addition it can relieve common ailments such as colic, wind and constipation.

With all these wonderful benefits, it’s no surprise that these classes are on the increase. Two such centres offering ‘mother and baby yoga classes’ in London are The Life Centre in Kensington and Complete Coaching in Wanstead. The latter serving up a host of classes and nutritional programmes for pregnant and post-pregnant women, including pilates and body massage.

And it’s not only mother’s and babies enjoying the perks, toddlers to teenagers are also getting wise to the supple trend, and yoga classes to music can increasingly be found nationwide to cater for this sweeping youth movement. Head to our main site to see exactly where you can send your little darling for their dose of children’s yoga and await the transformation!

Hot Stuff

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

One thing we’ve noticed here at Wahanda is the surge in searches for fiery fitness craze – Bikram yoga. At first we were a little baffled by the sudden interest, but after some serious scrutinisation we think we’ve managed to uncover exactly why it’s at the top of everyone’s list…

Unless you’ve been walking around in a bubble for the past month, you’ll probably have witnessed the unveiling of Mr Andy Murray’s new-found Murray muscles. The cheeky Scot lifted his sleeves to reveal his honed and toned guns of steel after his win over Richard Gasquet propelled him into the Wimbledon semi-finals. Unfortunately, they weren’t quite powerful enough to see him lift the winning trophy, but nevertheless we can’t help but be a tiny bit jealous of those muscular attributes.

We were even more impressed when we found out his new and improved physique was a result of practising Bikram yoga. A favourite with celebrities such as Elle McPherson, Madonna, Daniel Craig and now the wannabe Wimbledon star, these hardcore 90 minute classes which take place in rooms heated to 45 degrees, have been likened to carrying out yoga in a sauna. Currently there are eight Bikram yoga centres in the UK, although with such a hot guest list, we predict there might be more popping up in the near future. Wellness is big business

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

The Global Spa Summit has released the latest data on the spa market and it certainly makes for some interesting reading. They estimate the global spa economy is now worth $60 billion worldwide, and more than $250 billion once you factor in the impact of the spa industry on hospitality, tourism and related products. Of course, wellness is more than just spas, so if you add to that the beauty, fitness, wellness, products and health food markets, you’re talking about a trillion dollar market!

We were never ones for maths and all those zeros can be hard to fathom, so let’s put that in perspective for a second. In 2007, according to official bodies, the hugely high profile worldwide motion picture box office took $26.7 billion, while the global recorded music market (including digital music) was $29 billion and, unlike the wellness industry, that’s a shrinking market.

But the market isn’t just large in terms of the money that’s spent – it’s big in terms of the number of providers as well. The study found that there are now more than 71,000 spas worldwide. Day and salon spas represent the majority of the market (63%), hotel spas (16%), medical spas (6%), and destination spas (2.1%).

Customers often tell us they’re overwhelmed by the choice in the wellness area and unsure of where to go – this report helps explain why. Consumers are spending increasingly large amounts of their disposable incomes on wellness, and given the scope of the industry, consumers deserve better tools to make more informed decisions about their wellness providers, and it’s here that we think Wahanda comes in.
