Latest Spa Trend: Eco-spas

Friday, July 24th, 2009

As published on WOW Travel: Eco-spas have become one of the hottest concepts in the wellness industry, says Lopo Champalimaud, CEO of www.wahanda.com.

Eco SpaWith an ever-increasing sense of environmental awareness, more consumers are beginning to search for “greener” spa options, and as a result more spas are being constructed or rebranded as eco-spas. We know, of course, that this trend is not just limited to spas – retreats, yoga centres, gyms, and salons have become “eco-friendly” to be more environmentally responsible.

Few would deny that environmental sustainability will be one of the most important trends of our time. As an industry focused on wellbeing, therefore, we are well placed to demonstrate how we can promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

However, with the proliferation of eco-branded wellness businesses, an increasing number of people are confused about such points as:

  • What is an eco-spa?
  • Is it different from a natural spa?
  • Is using natural or organic products enough to be green?
  • Can green spas be luxurious at the same time?
  • Does a green spa need to be carbon neutral, or just recycle?
  • Are non-eco spas environmentally friendly?
  • Shouldn’t all spas, regardless of whether they are “eco-spas”, actively to engage in protecting the environment?

These are issues that we as an industry need to answer to ensure that the confusion and lack of clarity does not undermine the real advances many businesses are taking to be more responsible.

Worryingly, however, consumers are increasingly expressing a “green trust gap”. According to the newly-released 2009 BBMG Conscious Consumer Report 25 per cent of American consumers admit they have “no way of knowing” if a product is green even though 77 per cent believe they can make a positive difference by purchasing products from socially or environmentally responsible companies. If the wellness industry is properly to support its stated actions, we need actively to address this trust gap.

Fortunately, there has been some important early work. Most of the major spa associations, including iSPA, BISA, and Spa Business Association are working on developing guidelines. The Green Spa Network has taken a more definite step forward with an accreditation scheme for spas based on a checklist of different areas. All of these advances are helpful in beginning to outline the areas businesses need to consider when evaluating and communicating their green or eco credentials. There are still more steps that need to be taken to provide a definitive, consistent, comparable and clear message. Some immediate questions that jump to mind are: Who is judging if someone is compliant? What happens if someone does not pass one of the areas? Do the same standards apply internationally? These are just some of the areas that need further consideration and ironing out.

The reality is that there is no single policy document on what it means to be an eco-spa. Titanic Spa is among those who have taken the initiative to provide a clear summary of an eco-spa on their homepage - but is this enough? I believe part of the problem is that an “eco/not eco” classification is simply too binary. When it comes to responsibility for the environment, things are not black and white; being “eco” is an ongoing and sometimes customized process, which involves continual improvement. Additionally, the current usage of “eco spa” suggests that those businesses that do not carry this label are by default not being environmentally responsible. Therefore, as a first step, instead of focusing on simple labels, I think that spas (and hotels) should voluntarily breakdown their eco credentials across eight key areas and present them clearly as a table so that consumers can make an informed decision like this:

What is your spa doing in these areas?

  • Water usage
  • Laundry
  • Lighting, Insulation & Power Usage
  • Products & Suppliers used
  • Construction & Furnishings
  • Waste disposal
  • Staff Training
  • Landscaping

The key is that this is not a check-list. A spa does not just say “yes” or “no”, it says what it is doing or not doing and providing that information to consumers so that they can make an informed decision.

Of course, this is only a very first step. Ultimately, I would like to see this breakdown evolve to the point that there is a single standard amongst industry bodies and that they work to rank spas based on the criteria above so that ultimately spas would have an eco rating. Not a binary stamp of approval but a rating stating just how ecologically friendly you are across these key areas.

Regardless of whether a business wants to be labeled an eco-spa or not, the spa industry should be a catalyst for environmental awareness and best practice for both businesses who want to learn how to be more green, and for consumers who want to promote a more sustainable lifestyle. We should be leading consumers in how they can live in a more environmentally sustainable way and promoting our wellbeing in all aspects of our lives. We can all play a part and we owe it to consumers to provide more transparency in terms of our efforts in this area. This is an important cause for all of us and the wellness and hospitality industries have a significant role to play in shaping the future.

‘Sweatox’ relieves hot Britons as temperatures soar

Sweatox - botox for sweatingWe all know that sweating is not particularly attractive but trying to control a dewy forehead or the moistness under your arm isn’t an easy task.  As experts issued health warnings this week to stay cool and keep protected, the heat is on which is why the Harley Medical Group declared the start of the ‘Sweatox Season’. It seems that some people are going to extreme measures to stop being sweaty this summer. The new trend is to go under the needle for a quick fix to zap away sweat, leaving you feeling fresh and fabulous.

What is Sweatox?
Sweatox is the name penned by the Harley Medical Group for anti-sweat botox treatments which have seen a dramatic increase in this unusual British heatwave.

This summer, the ‘Sweatox season’ has been brought forward because of the early and even unexpected summer heat. The Harley Medical Group has seen ‘Sweatox’ bookings outnumbering last year’s. Larger cities like London, Manchester and Chelmsford have seen the biggest increase in this new trend and people are flocking to get their pits and hands sweat free by using this famous treatment.

Sweatox can relieve sweat in the typically sweaty areas of the body, including:
•         Palms of the hands
•         Under arms
•         Chest
•         Soles of the feet

Dove Spa

If you’d like to give this anti-sweat treatment a go why not take a look at where you can get your dose of botox. But, if  ‘Sweatox’ is not for you then check out Wahanda’s top ten tips to stay cool and stress free this summer.

  1. Peak sun is a no no! Try to stay away from the sun between peak times 12-3 in the afternoon.
  2. Spritz on the go. Carry a moisture spritz in your bag to give yourself a much needed cool down on the go or why not try out the Dove Detox offer that uses a body scrub containing cooling peppermint oil.
  3. Hide your head. Hats are big in the fashion stakes this season and practical too, so hide your head in the sun and look stylish all at the same time.
  4. Dress cool. Now, we don’t mean dressing by the Vogue fashion guidelines with your key pieces- wearing a heavy suit in this heat can be seriously uncomfortable so opt for light weight and loose fit clothing.
  5. Pools are cool. Pop down to your local swimming pool to cool down either on your lunch break or after a hard day’s work.
  6. Water, water, water. Carry water at all times to keep hydrated and cool.
  7. Take time out. Take time to pamper yourself when the heat is on and stress levels are rising. Yoga is known to have a calming influence and keeps you fit too. Or keep calm with a relaxing massage.
  8. Retreat to cooler climates. If you really cannot stand this heat then why not retreat to a relaxing spa in the coolest country Iceland. The Blue Lagoon offers a range of treatments from Mud baths to Swedish massage.
  9. Spice is nice. A top tip for keeping cool is eating spicy foods. Spicy food stimulates your appetite, circulation and raises body temperature, making you sweat more therefore making you cooler.  Maybe that’s why in countries like Mexico and India their food is heavily influenced by hot spices.
  10. Sexy for summer. Keeping fit and healthy will make you happier in the summer months when you’re able to wear your favourite bikini or favourite summer mini dress. There are plenty of things to try including an all over body work out doing pole dancing or if you’d rather not work so hard try one of Wahanda’s free sessions of Power Plate.

What women want - a vacuum that sucks away cellulite

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

smoothshapes11Here at Wahanda we know what women want. So when we heard that a brand new cellulite busting machine, SmoothShapes was coming to London, we knew that women would be curious. We couldn’t wait to get our buttocks under the vacuum so that we could tell you all about it.

SmoothShapes is a new and innovative system designed to combat the stubborn rimple dimple appearance of cellulite. The machine, new at the DestinationSkin Clinic in the Westfield Shopping Centre in London is the second one in the UK and had been delivered straight in from the USA on the day of our wellness event. Naturally, Wahanda were thrilled to be invited as one of the first to try it out.

What is SmoothShapes?
Here comes the science bit. SmoothShapes is a pain free procedure using proprietary technology called photomology to tackle every woman’s arch enemy, cellulite. The photomology works by combining dynamic energy, in the form of laser and light, with mechanical manipulation, in the form of contoured rollers and vacuum.

The dynamic laser and light energy is used to liquefy fat in the enlarged cells and repair brittle collagen. The collagen is remodeled so skin is smoother and tighter and fat cells are restored. The contoured rollers and vacuum, which massages across the problem area, pushes out the liquefied fat through the lymphatic system leaving a smoother, tighter appearance.

Who can use SmoothShapes?
Nine in ten women suffer from cellulite - even the most beautiful, slim and envied women in Hollywood have been spotted sporting that cottage cheese skin condition, so  SmoothShapes has been designed to be used by anyone who suffers from the orange peel syndrome. However, if you are pregnant you may want to hold off until you have given birth – but it’s a great way to lose that baby weight.

What to expect?smoothshapes4
The treatment feels like a deep tissue massage, it’s pain-free and feels rather soothing. You will experience a gentle warming of the skin and it may leave your skin slightly pink for up to two hours after the procedure; however there is no recovery time required, so you can get back to your daily routine as normal. After the first treatment you may notice a slightly tighter feel to your skin but a course of eight sessions over four weeks is recommended to really notice an improved difference.  But even after our first treatment, we at Wahanda left with a smile on our faces and a little less jiggle to our bottoms.

SmoothShapes treatment is available to purchase at DestinationSkin Clinic, London and at SkinGenesis Clinic, Cheshire– the only stockists in the UK.

Pole dancing… for men

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Pole dancingHere at Wahanda we’re always on the look out for the latest fitness trend, so when we heard pole dancing is the latest way men are choosing to keep trim and toned, we thought it was worth shouting about. Following in the footsteps of female celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Carmen Electra, Cindy Crawford and Jessica Alba, more and more men are now getting in on the action and signing up for pole dancing classes to keep fit the fun way.

Pole dancing can tone the upper body, strengthen stomach muscles and increase muscle definition in the bottom, arms and thighs – an all over body workout. In just one hour, up to 250 calories can be burnt off - almost as many as your average gym session. One of the UK’s leading male pole dancing instructors, AJ, has been running pole dancing classes at the Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden for five years, and in October he will be co-organising Mr Pole Fitness 2009 – so guys,  sign up and re-live those rope-climbing lessons from school to become a pole dancing pro.

Find out more about the art of pole dancing and discover classes at gyms and dance studios near you on Wahanda – go on, you know you want to…

French kisses all round

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Lip enhancementThey say no pain no gain, but ‘they’ clearly need a new saying as a new French lip procedure which lets you ditch the lip gloss for good has come to the UK. If you want lips as plump as Angelina Jolie without the hassle, this quick, subtle and painless lip enhancement procedure is for you. Brought to the UK by its creator, French cosmetic surgeon Philippe Bellity, the technique was initially developed as a more natural approach to lip-plumping, after the trend of overtly obvious filler treatments grew in the mainstream media.

Being all about gloss and plumping rather than voluptuous volume, the procedure is not for you if needles make you weak at the knees. Using pin-prick injections around the lip line and on the top layer of the lip rather than the muscle, hyaluronic acid solution is used to subtly plump up lips and add a natural shine. Quick enough to do in your lunch hour, you’ll still have enough time for a snack as the procedure only takes half an hour. The results however last from six months to a year, leaving you with a gloriously pumped up pout that even celebrities will envy.

Dr Bellity has made the treatment widely popular in France, creating the technique after qualifying in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Proving that Leslie Ash’s look is not the desired result, Dr Bellity says:

“Lip enhancement has had bad press in the cosmetic surgery industry and French women want to look naturally enhanced. You never see a French woman with a trout pout, thanks to the technique I have perfected.”

The hyaluronic acid solution is a substance which naturally occurs in the body, making it a great way of adding some shape and shine without being too invasive. There is even an antidote to the treatment so that if you feel you’ve got more than you bargained for, your lips can be reduced back to size.

If you fancy a fuller, glossier pout you can get the treatment at the London Day Surgery Centre with prices starting at £500. It may seem pricey, but think how much money you’ll save on lip glosses once you’ve acquired that enviable bee-stung lip look.
