Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Limerick, shows support for ‘Living in a Window’

Monday, November 28th, 2011

We love to see people coming together to help a worthy cause – so we were very impressed by the efforts of the staff at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Limerick. The staff, along with leisure centre members and guests, recently completed a sponsored treadmill challenge as part of Limerick’s Live 95FM ‘Living in a Window’ project. We’ve got to admit, we admire their stamina…

This year’s fundraising saw hotel and spa staff take it in turns to complete 30 minute workouts on a treadmill in the lobby area. With over €800 raised for ‘Living in a Window’, we reckon the dedicated team members must be feeling pretty proud of themselves – not to mention nice and fit.

‘Living in a Window’ is an annual project, which helps to raise funds for CARI (Children at Risk in Ireland) and the Children’s Ark Unit at the Midwestern Regional Hospital, Dooradoyle. The project is right up the Radisson Blu Hotel’s street, as the hotel and spa have had an Active Responsible Business programme in place since 2002. A leisure venue that gets involved in community projects, environmental work and health and safety? We like their style…

Fancy a bit of a break? Why not visit the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa for some perfect pampering. We promise you won’t have to hop on the treadmill (unless you want to!)

Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa becomes York’s first 5 star hotel

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Congratulations to the staff at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa, which has just been awarded a prestigious 5 star rating. One of only 90 hotels in the UK to receive 5 stars from the AA, the Grand is also home to one of Yorkshire’s most luxurious spas. We know where we’ll be going next time we fancy a bit of a break…

In addition to receiving the highly sought after 5 star rating, the hotel has received two AA rosettes in recognition of its restaurant, the Grill Room at the Grand. Foodies will be glad to know that use of the restaurant is not just exclusive to hotel guests – meaning that everyone has the opportunity to sample a 5 star lifestyle.

A spokesperson for the AA said: ‘The Grand has achieved one of the highest accolades awarded by the AA. 5 black stars are a symbol of excellence achieved through dedication, high levels of investment and a passion to be the best. We are delighted that York has its first 5 star hotel.’

Maria Florou, General Manager of the hotel, is equally delighted: ‘The team here deserve enormous credit for what they have done – they have worked incredibly hard and have put their heart and soul into this project. But we all know that an even greater challenge lies ahead, and that is maintaining and even exceeding the high standards that we have set for ourselves.

‘Our guest feedback tells us that we have always delivered a 5 star experience. But this weekend it will feel extra special to welcome guests into a 5 star rated hotel.’

Guests craving the 5 star treatment are sure to love the hotel’s pampering spa. Set in the impressive vaults of the Grade II listed building, the spa offers facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and relaxation rooms. Guests can also enjoy a range of different face and body treatments designed to rejuvenate, refresh and revive. Sounds right up our street…

Want to visit the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa to see it for yourself? Keep an eye out for some great deals, such as this relaxing spa day.

Plans for new health spa at Mansfield College unveiled

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

One of the best ways to learn any trade is on the job – and that’s exactly what beauty and wellbeing students at Nottinghamshire’s Mansfield College will be doing. The institution’s new £11m complex will cater for those enrolled on hair, beauty and complimentary therapy courses – with the opportunity to help run the on site spa. Sounds like an opportunity that’s just too good to miss…

The spa, which will be operated by students in order to help them develop their vocational skills, will be situated next to hair and beauty salons, and will include three treatment rooms. A large open-plan room will offer couch-based treatments, whilst two others will offer the spa bed ‘Jouvence’ and a rasul mud bath treatment. This will be a notable improvement on current facilities, which are limited mostly to couch-based therapies.

Also available for students to make use of will be a sauna, steamroom, ice feature, spa pool, Monsoon feature shower, heated loungers and a foot spa. We doubt they’ll be many beauty school drop-outs with facilities like that on offer…

A spokesperson for Mansfield College says: ‘By opening [the health spa] up to the public, it will provide students with real-life vocational experience that prepares them for the world of work, coupled with commercial opportunities for the college’. We bet Mansfield’s students are getting pretty excited – we know that we would be.

Been too long since you last visited a spa? Why not have a browse of our spa breaks for some health and wellbeing inspiration.

With eight treatment rooms planned, in addition to a rock sauna, an ice fountain, a massage shower and rasul, the new Inchyra Hotel spa experience looks set to be innovative, exciting and refreshing. We can’t wait to see what other tricks Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has got up its sleeve…

New training academy for spa therapists

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Looking to set yourself apart from the competition? We’ve got some good news for newly qualified spa and beauty therapists – a new ‘finishing school’ has opened in Putney. The ARK Academy, run by skincare specialists ARK Age Aware, will help to fully prepare therapists for the working environment – equipping them with a variety of professional and commercial skills. We think it’s an inspired idea…

Wondering why a finishing school is necessary? Sara Wilce, Director of the Academy, says: ‘I’ve spent the last 12 years of my career trying to recruit commercially viable therapists and it is getting increasingly difficult to do so, with lack of technique and confidence in massage in particular.

‘The idea for the ARK Academy arose from that struggle and will allow newly qualified therapists to improve their techniques, gain that all important confidence and set them on the path to a fulfilling career.’ Sounds pretty good to us…

Training packages at the Academy will include the development of skills such as management, reception training, customer service provision, team leadership and refresher courses for therapists who are re-entering the industry. Advanced courses in massage are also available, as is support for businesses retailing ARK products – so you needn’t panic if you haven’t quite mastered the finishing touches yet.

We’re big fans of  Spa-London, so we were pleased to hear that the brand has plans to expand. GLL, the leisure trust behind the concept, will be opening the first of the new sites later this year. Swimming costumes at the ready…

The first new Spa-London venue is due to be opened at the Rainbow Centre in Epsom, later this year. GLL are also considering setting up a second at their Wimbledon leisure centre – good news for South Londoners.

Owners of Ragdale Hall health spa celebrate 21 years of involvement

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Big congratulations to Ragdale Hall owners Michael Isaacs and Penny Nesbitt, who recently celebrated twenty one years running their award-winning spa. We hope there was lots of cake in honour of the occasion!

Ragdale Hall was first opened in 1973 by Slimming Magazine, but was bought in 1990 by Michael Isaacs and Gary Nesbitt (Penny’s late husband). Since then the spa has seen the introduction of a variety of new facilities, including the impressive Thermal Spa, which opened in 2007. Featuring an unusual candle pool and a waterfall pool, the Thermal Spa is the perfect place to relax, unwind and refresh the body.

Over the years, Ragdale Hall has won a number of well-deserved awards, including the Best Spa in Europe 2007, Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Spa Awards 2010 Favourite UK Spa Retreat and Sunday Times Travel Magazine’s Readers’ Awards – Favourite UK Spa 2010.

Michael Isaacs says, ‘Ragdale Hall is a very special place and Penny and I are very proud to have been its custodians for the last 21 years. We have an incredible band of very loyal staff, many who have been with us from day one.  We are also very grateful for the support of so many loyal guests who come back time and time again’.

Fancy a celebratory trip to Ragdale Hall? Why not treat yourself to a pampering spa break. And whilst you are there, grab a copy of ‘Ragdale Hall – The Life and Times of an English Country House’ from the boutique and learn all about the Hall’s fascinating history.
